As part of our mission to develop transformative leaders in health and rehabilitation sciences, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (HRS) is creating a program focused on leadership development to equip, inspire and motivate HRS alumni, faculty, staff and learners to drive meaningful change.
The introduction to this program will be launched as a three-part collaborative speaker series titled Perspectives in Leadership, with the inaugural series focused on empowerment.
Part 1 – Defining Transformational Leadership and Empowerment

Speakers: Jimmy Onate, PhD, AT, ATC Interim Director, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and Interim Vice Dean for Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Medicine. Jimmy has dedicated his career to mentoring and coaching. His passion for mentoring is evident in his hands-on approach to education, where he combines academic rigor with practical experience. Jimmy's dedication to coaching extends beyond the classroom, as he actively engages in various leadership development initiatives on and off campus.
Nick Shoaf is a third-year Health Sciences major with a minor in Biology from Westerville, Ohio. Nick is pursuing a degree in Health Sciences to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare industry before attending medical school. Leadership development holds particular significance for him, as it not only enhances his personal growth but also uplifts those around him.

Part 2 – Ignite: Ideas in Leadership - Focus on Empowerment

Speaker: Ohio State alumna Cindy Chang, MD, FACSM, FAMSSM (’84 and ‘89). Dr. Chang is the Chief Medical Officer for the National Women's Soccer League, overseeing league medical operations and protocols while guiding improved strategies for injury management, rehabilitation and preventative care. Dr. Chang completed her sports medicine fellowship and then served as an assistant professor and team physician at Ohio State ('92-'95) before becoming the head team physician at University of California-Berkeley. She continues to teach as professor emerita in the Department of Orthopedics and Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
