The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) and the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences are proud to announce the creation of an AOTA Fellowship Program providing an innovative Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship. The program will seek accreditation by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center accepts one fellow for a 12 month-long program that begins every January. The OT fellowship supports the missions of both the AOTA and Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, by preparing clinicians to work and seek certification in the specialty of hand therapy. This will be accomplished via mentored learning to enhance specialty skills, knowledge and professional behaviors in the field of hand therapy.
The fellow will have the unique opportunity to treat patients with diverse hand and upper extremity diagnoses.
- In addition to clinical time with experience certified hand therapist the fellow will also have the opportunity to shadow distinguished hand surgeons during office hours and surgery.
- Regular fellowship conferences
- Teaching in the Division of OT entry-level OTD program
- Hand on splinting labs
- Collaboration with OSUWMC OT and PT post-professional programs
In addition to clinical time, the fellows will spend time as an instructor and mentored colleague in our nationally-ranked Doctorate of Occupational Therapy Program. As one of the most established and respected OT programs in the country, we boast outstanding faculty that are committed to promoting scholarship, leadership and evidenced-based practice in occupational therapy.
Fellows will be considered an employee of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and will be entitled to all the comprehensive benefits of a full time employee.
Compensation and Benefits
Program participants are employed full time by the OSUMC, including a benefits package. Salary is commensurate with revenue-generating clinic time. Participants do not pay tuition.

Hand and Upper Extremity Occupational Therapy Fellowship
- The fellow will obtain the clinical knowledge and skills to pass the hand therapy certification exam.
- The fellow will demonstrated the necessary knowledge and interpersonal skill to teach patients, students and other medical staff. This education will not only focus on the role of hand therapy but the need to emphasize holistic approach found at the cornerstone of occupational therapy.
- The fellow will demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain a working relationship with referring physicians, hand surgeons and other therapist to maximize patient care.
- The fellow will be able to identify the best evidence in their evaluation/treatment approaches while maintaining patient centered holistic treatment.
- The fellow will develop advances splinting skills. This includes being able to recommend the appropriate orthosis for a variety of conditions, and make the appropriate modifications to an orthosis through the continuum of care but to also allow maximum function within reason to the healing time frame.
