His appointment, effective June 1, is pending approval by the university’s Board of Trustees. He steps into this role following the departure of Jimmy Oñate, PhD, who is now dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Dr. Buford currently serves as a professor in HRS and as director of the Division of Physical Therapy. A longtime member of the HRS faculty, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence in education, student success, faculty development and collaborative leadership throughout the Ohio State College of Medicine and the broader university.

During his 27-year tenure at Ohio State, Dr. Buford has advanced program innovation, interprofessional education and the school’s mission of preparing exceptional health professionals and scholars. He brings extensive experience in academic leadership, curriculum development, faculty mentorship and student success, along with a strong record of accomplishment and collaboration supporting our research and education priorities, while contributing meaningful academic service to the school, college and university.

In addition to his leadership experience, Dr. Buford is a nationally recognized scholar in neurophysiology, motor control and biomechanics. His research focuses on how brain systems coordinate movement and contribute to recovery following neurological injury, with applications spanning stroke rehabilitation and physical therapy practice.

As interim director of HRS, Dr. Buford will work closely with faculty, staff, students and college leaders to ensure continuity across all programs and operations during this transitional period. His priorities will include sustaining academic excellence; maintaining stability in the school’s initiatives; collaborating with stakeholders from across the college, medical center and university; and fostering an environment in which the HRS community can continue to thrive.
