Name: Abigail L. Kunze
Hometown: Hilliard, OH
Major: Health Sciences, Pre-Med track
Minor: Biology
Class of 2021
Fun Fact: I’ve been on an Alaskan cruise.
Career Path: I plan to go to medical school following graduation.
Why did you choose your major?
I originally began in the Exploration program, but then chose Medical Dietetics as my major because I enjoy learning about nutrition and knew I wanted to be able to help people with their health in some way. I changed to Health Sciences because I decided I wanted a more holistic understanding of health care and wanted to pursue medical school. I believe Health Sciences is a good choice for my career path because I have obtained the knowledge needed to understand medicine and science as well as the skills required to provide good, quality care to patients in need.
What advice would you give future students planning to pursue this major?
Advice I would give to students planning to pursue Health Sciences would be make sure you have outside activities such as volunteering, shadowing and/or research because the major doesn’t provide these for you and you must pursue these opportunities on your own.
What has been the most helpful resource(s) to you at Ohio State?
I have found the advisors to be helpful with answering specific questions you may have regarding how to schedule and which classes you will need to take to graduate. The faculty members in HRS are all very nice and helpful and have made me even more interested and excited to learn about the material they teach. I found the University Exploration program to be very helpful in regards to narrowing down my major choices and finding my own strengths and talents.
What are you doing as a student at Ohio State that you never imagined you’d be doing?
As a student at Ohio State, I never thought that I would be making the Dean’s List and getting good grades in all the difficult science courses I have been enrolled in. I was intimidated coming into college because the amount of work and studying drastically increased, but I found that I was able to adapt quickly and easily because I am passionate about my major and my career path.
Do you feel prepared for the future of your profession?
I feel that I have been well prepared for my career path because Health Sciences offers courses such as Disparities in Healthcare and Ethics that teach students about patient-centered care. This is super important for future physicians like myself, to have a solid understanding of these concepts along with the core science courses I’ve also taken, such as Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry.
What does “The future of health care begins here” mean to you?
To me, “The future of health care begins here” means we, as students, can change health care as we know it and to improve the quality of care for patients in need. What we choose to do with our experiences from school, volunteering, research, etc. will shape the health care system and we can change it for the better.
