Rachel Brackman - HS 460x460Name: Rachel N. Brackman

Hometown: Springboro, Ohio

Major: Health Sciences

Minor: Communications

Class of 2021

Fun Fact: I’m named after Rachel Green from the show Friends.

Career Pathway: I plan to attend Physical Therapy school.

Why did you choose your major?

I chose Health Sciences because it allowed me to have a more flexible schedule and there was a curriculum plan that aligned nicely with the prerequisites, I needed to take for Physical Therapy school. I thought that Health Sciences would give me a more comprehensive view of the healthcare field compared to some other majors.

What advice would you give future students planning to pursue this major?

One piece of advice I would give is to not get involved with a ton of different clubs. This can be very overwhelming and cause too many time constraints. Instead, try to pick one or two things that you are truly passionate about and become invested in those clubs. Try applying for an executive board position in those clubs. It is better to be truly invested in a club than just doing the bare minimum to be an active member.

What has been the most helpful resource(s) or support to you at Ohio State?

I would say that the faculty members have been the most helpful to me. All of my professors have been easily approachable and hold many times for office hours so that you can speak with them individually. The faculty in HRS truly care about your future and want you to succeed.

What are you doing as a student at Ohio State that you never imagined you’d be doing?

Currently, I’m the Vice President of Communications for the Buckeye Blood Club here on campus which is something I never imagined doing here. I was always very shy growing up and never thought I would be in such a big leadership role like this. Ohio State has taught me to step out of my comfort zone and has allowed me to excel in ways I never thought imaginable.

Do you feel you are prepared for the future of your profession?

I do feel prepared for PT school. The Health Sciences major does a good job of giving an overall view of our health care system. For example, I have taken a variety of classes such as ethics, disparities in health care, disease prevention and promotion, etc. The Health Sciences major has allowed me to choose from so many different electives so that I am actually invested in what I am learning about.

What does “The future of health care begins here” mean to you?

“The future of health care begins here” to me means that it is us, current students, who are going to be changing the future of the world’s health care industry. Every current health care professional was a student at one point in time just like us. Through hard work and determination, we have the power to inflict great change for the better in regard to health.
