Research Focus
The major focus of my research involves: issues related to tobacco dependence, workforce development issues in the Health Professions (specifically dealing with teamwork, the Millennial generation and interprofessional education) and teaching/learning in the health professions.
Through undergraduate research projects that I advise, I have explored tobacco dependence issues as they relate to the Respiratory Therapist. There is a lack of involvement by Respiratory Therapy at the national, state and local level in tobacco-related research. I plan to increase the visibility of the field of Respiratory Therapy in tobacco-related research in the following ways.
I have been funded to work with the AARC for research on the national level related to the Respiratory Therapist’s delivery of smoking cessation counseling. This funding was used to develop training programs to better prepare Respiratory Therapists to deliver cessation counseling. Other areas of interest in this area that are conducive to collaboration involve college students’ use of tobacco and health literacy as it relates to pharmacotherapy for tobacco dependence.
