Overview
I have developed a reputation as a Respiratory Therapy Educator that specializes in critical thinking development and recruitment. Since my teaching career began, I have placed an emphasis on new ways for students to develop critical thinking skills, incorporating new activities and approaches into every course in the program. I have spent significant time developing assignments and strategies for students to put information together in a cohesive way that allows them to utilize their knowledge more effectively once in the clinical environment. By impacting the student’s ability to critically think, I have impacted their ability to succeed in the program, on credentialling exams and as graduate respiratory therapists employed at a hospital. I participate in credentialling exam review sessions during the summer semester, in which students practice critical thinking through oral case reports and then review content for their post-graduation credentialing exams. My role in developing student critical thinking skills and my responsibility for teaching a large portion of their academic content paired with the summer exam review allows me to impact student success both during the program and post- graduation. Graduates of the undergraduate program consistently perform above the national mean on both the therapist multiple choice and clinical simulation exams (successful completion of both exams is required to achieve the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential) and both employers are graduates consistently indicate 100% satisfaction with the program. In recognition of these excellent outcomes, the program has received the Distinguished RRT Credentialing Success Award from CoARC every year since 2008, my impact has played a role in this success since 2012.
