Office Hours & Location
Our mental health counselors provide HIPPA compliant Telehealth to support mental health counseling for all students in HRS and the College of Medicine (exception medical students).
Counseling and consultation services are available to all students currently enrolled in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the College of Medicine. These services include:
- Individual therapy
- General mental health consultation
- Referral and linkage to community providers

If you or someone you know is an imminent danger to themselves or someone else, please go to the nearest Emergency Room or call 911. HRS/COM Counseling does not provide urgent or crisis response services. If you or someone you know is in need of urgent or crisis mental health support services, please use one of the urgent/crisis service below:

If you are an enrolled student at The Ohio State University and are experiencing a crisis or have an urgent need, please call the main OSU Counseling & Consultation Services office at 614-292-5766 to speak with a therapist. In the event of an emergency or need to speak with a clinician immediately, please visit your nearest emergency department or Netcare Access.
If you are calling after hours, Ohio State’s Counseling and Consultation Service provides crisis consultation for students. To access crisis consultation please call 614-292-5766 and choose option 2. This service is available every day, which includes weekends and holidays. You also have the option to schedule an appointment to speak with a therapist.

HRS/COM Counseling does not provide any urgent, crisis or walk-in services. If a situation is life threatening and you need immediate assistance, please contact OSUPD at (614) 292-2121, Wexner Medical Center at 614-293-8333 or 911.

All HRS/COM Counseling services are provided free of charge for eligible HRS/COM students.

If you are looking to establish services with a counselor for ongoing therapy, the process may take several weeks depending on the current waitlist status. Scheduling availability fluctuates depending on student support needs. Please know that we are working hard to ensure that all eligible students receive mental health services as soon as possible.
We understand that waiting for mental health services can be difficult. While you wait to be scheduled, it is important to use the additional support resources available at The Ohio State University during this process. There are a variety of options provided by the main Counseling & Consultation Service for urgent and immediate assistance, drop-in consultations and skill building workshops available daily.

The HRS/COM Counseling Office is currently operating on a waitlist status. After emailing the HRS Counseling email (hrscom.counseling@osumc.edu) each student will receive an email informing them of the waitlist status. This email will also include information about other options available to students as they wait for HRS/COM counseling services. Please see the additional options provided in the waitlist email below:
- Encouragement/reminder to access other support resources at Ohio State to support you while you wait for HRS/COM Counseling Services. All students waiting on the HRS/COM Counseling waitlist are encouraged to contact Ohio State’s main Counseling & Consultation Services to determine counseling availability.
- An invitation to schedule an appointment with HRS Counseling staff or the Counseling & Consultation Services staff to provide referral linkage for a community mental health provider. **Please note: all community health provider referrals will require active medical insurance coverage.**

All HRS/COM Counseling services occur virtually. To ensure a high quality and private experience, HRS/COM Counseling uses a HIPAA compliant Electronic Health Record software that provides each client with a personal appointment link via HIPAA compliant video portal.

Thank you for your interest in counseling services. Because you are considered a minor in the state of Ohio, we would need to meet with you to discuss your options for counseling services. It is important to know that all counseling services align with the limitations/restrictions provided by the Ohio Revised Code and it is important to know that there are limits to how much treatment we can provide without notifying a parent/guardian.
It is also important to remember that as mental health professionals in the State of Ohio, we are mandated reporters for child abuse (any person under 18 years old), elderly abuse or abuse to a disabled person. Learn more about concerns related to the endangerment/abuse of a child.

If you have reason to believe that a student is in life threatening distress, please immediately contact 911, the Ohio State Police Department at 614-292-2121 or the Wexner Medical Center at 614-293-8333. If you are with a student, you can also accompany them to the nearest Emergency Department for immediate support.
If the situation is not life threatening, being supportive and encouraging the student to contact HRS/COM Counseling is often the best first step. HRS/COM Counseling does not contact students who do not contact us first out of respect for their privacy and independence.
